Model Answer:

Yogendra Singh: Modernization of Indian Tradition

In his seminal work, Modernization of Indian Tradition, Yogendra Singh synthesizes the Structural-Functionalist and Historical/Indological approaches to argue that modernization in India is not a total rupture from the past. Instead, it involves a dialectical process where tradition adapts and coexists with modern elements.

Singh’s Paradigm of Modernization

Singh conceptualizes modernization along two axes: Sources of Change (Orthogenetic/internal like Sanskritization, vs. Heterogenetic/external like Westernization or Islam) and Substantive Domains (Cultural vs. Structural).

Modernization of Indian Tradition

The core of Singh’s thesis is that cultural modernization (changes in dress, education, and lifestyle) is occurring rapidly, whereas structural modernization (the breakdown of caste hierarchies and structural class inequalities) is highly restricted.

Drawing on Milton Singer, Singh notes that Indians manage conflicting values through Compartmentalization, embracing modernity in workplaces while strictly adhering to traditional rituals and familial norms at home.

Sociological Critiques

A.R. Desai critiques Singh for over-focusing on cultural traditions while ignoring that “modernization” in India is essentially capitalist development, which inherently generates structural class inequalities.

Dipankar Gupta challenges Singh with the concept of “Mistaken Modernity” (Westoxification), arguing that Indians have merely adopted Western consumerism and technology without internalizing core modern values like universalism, egalitarianism, and the rule of law.

Rajni Kothari’s concept of the Politicization of Caste illustrates Singh’s thesis, showing how traditional caste identities adapted to the modern institution of democracy.

Modern tools are frequently used to reinforce traditional identities. E-matrimony websites use advanced algorithms yet strictly filter for caste and gotra. Similarly, tech professionals in Bengaluru performing Ayudha Puja on laptops reflects the synthesis of the modern economy and traditional rituals.

Conclusion

Singh’s framework aligns with S.N. Eisenstadt’s concept of “Multiple Modernities”. It indicates that modernization in India is not a zero-sum game against tradition. Instead, it has produced a unique neo-traditionalism, where modernity is systematically Indianized and tradition is continually modernized.
