Primary (igneous) rocks are the earth’s foundational rocks, formed by the cooling, solidification, and crystallization of molten magma or lava via magmatic differentiation.

1. Characteristics of Primary Rocks

  • Crystalline Texture: Grain size directly depends on cooling rates, creating either coarse (phaneritic) or fine (aphanitic) textures.
  • Absence of Fossils: Extreme heat during magmatic formation destroys all organic matter.
  • Non-Stratified: They form as massive, unstratified blocks lacking true bedding planes.
  • High Density and Hardness: Highly compact, making them exceptionally resistant to mechanical weathering.
  • Mineral Wealth: Primary host for precious metallic minerals (e.g., iron, nickel, gold) formed through Bowen’s Reaction Series.

2. Types of Primary Rocks

1. Based on Mode of Occurrence (Origin):

  • Intrusive (Plutonic): Magma cools slowly deep underground, forming large crystals (e.g., Granite, Chota Nagpur Plateau).
  • Extrusive (Volcanic): Lava cools rapidly on the surface, yielding fine-grained rocks (e.g., Basalt, Deccan Traps).
